My Story

Hello,
I’m Mel

I spent over a decade in New York City working across every side of the story: finding it, reporting it, producing it, directing it, supervising it, distributing it, leading teams to make more of it.

The goal has always been the same: make human stories land as a feeling, no matter how big or small the screen.

Early on, that meant creating a long-form documentary series shot entirely on phones for NowThis, a viral news outlet reaching millions on social. It won an Edward R. Murrow Award and became our first HBO pilot. At The New Yorker, the same goal found a filmmaking home: curating and producing the magazine’s Oscar-winning documentary series, leading a team of filmmakers, running award campaigns, and directing short films of my own. A move into branding came next, showing me how much creative possibility opens up when a story moves through an organization instead of a newsroom.

Every one of those roles hit the same wall: the vision for the story was often bigger than the resources to tell it well.

Now, as founder of fwd slash studio, I’m building around those old constraints by introducing AI to the production process; making cinematic storytelling that evokes real feeling more accessible to people building things with heart.

At The New Yorker, worked with filmmakers across all walks of life to curate the magazine’s weekly documentary short series, managing the festival circuit from Sundance premieres to panels at Tribeca and Big Sky all the way through to our Academy Awards FYC campaigns and nominations. Alongside that, I directed and supervised over 100 short films, both with our internal team and with external filmmakers.

Journalism is where it all started. I knew I wanted to tell stories since I was 15, and it became my first avenue to actually do that. My first role, at then-startup NowThis, gave me the room to innovate with video formats, and it’s where my fascination with technology and storytelling first took hold, using new tools to make something feel bigger than the resources behind it. I reported and produced over 200 social-first videos and more than 10 short documentaries. Underneath that volume, I was honing my craft: finding and sourcing stories that resonated, sharpening my instincts as a reporter and an interviewer, and being the sole producer and editor on nearly everything I made, from first pitch to final post. That foundation still shows up in everything I do.

I kept watching the same thing happen. A story gets approved in the pitch. Everyone’s excited. Then it dies in the budget meeting, reduced by resources that were never going to stretch far enough, or worse, made anyway and quietly stripped of everything that made it cinematic in the first place.

From November 2025 to February 2026, I took a career break to go deep on that problem. Not to find a shortcut. To find out if AI creative production tools could actually hold up to cinematic, powerful storytelling without needing the oversight and six-figure budgets that usually decide whether a story gets made at all, or gets made small.

In May 2026, I launched fwd slash studio. I’m still in the process of building it out, and the mission is specific: work with small to medium brands who can’t afford a big agency campaign but still need real storytelling to scale. Right now, that means testing and collaborating with models and tools that meet two bars at once, creative caliber and commercially safe caliber, not one at the expense of the other.
